the romantic movement

sex shopping and the novel ~ a deliciously fun insight by alain de botton
tired of her capacity for cynicism, tired of seeing only faults in herself and others, she wished to be overwhelmed by her feelings for a fellow human being. she wanted a situation where there would be no choice, no time to sigh and ask 'but are he and i really that suited anyway?', where analysis and interpretation would be superfluous, where the other would simply be an unquestionable and wholly natural presence.

the issue of how to cede to seduction is tortuous: too soon and one may appear unworthy, too slow and one may lose the interest of the partner. prudery and laxity may share a common anxiety. a person could agree to make love at once for fear that delay would irrevocably lose the partner's interest, or they could never make love for fear the fact would lead to instant abandonment. by nature, alice was inclined to react according to the first fear, intolerant of romantic inflation, the process by which the seduced flirtatiously gamble on continued demand in the face of curtailed supply.

there is an all too obvious link between a moral attack on shopping without need and a moral attack on copulation without reproduction - in both cases, it is pleasure which has been censored, more particularly, feminine pleasure, typically by men with top hats and bushy beards.

the magazine had to make alice unhappy. it couldn't tell her that what she was wearing would be fine for another year, that appearance didn't matter so much anyway, that it didn't count who you knew or what colour your bedroom was. the clothes section had to leave her lamenting the garments missing from her own wardrobe, of the world which were sunnier than her own, the section entitled 'lifestyle' had to humiliate her with the implicit message that she probably had no life and it certainly had no style.
